Silent Auction - 15th May '08
Thanks to everyone who came down to bid on the prizes at the Silent Auction last week. It was a little quieter than usual, but we raised more than ever, so go figure... A little short of £900!!! Must be due to the fantastic prizes that were on offer yet again. OH YES. Thanks to all the people and organisations who donated the prizes, and of course thanks to all our friends, old and new, who came down to bid on them.
Some of the stars of the night were a week in a cave house apartment in Spain, a pair of tickets to the Big Chill festival, gym membership, reflexology sessions and lot's of gorgeous artwork and carvings from Africa. Keep your eyes out for the next one coming soon. MEP Offices open to all - 12th March '08 The Malawi Education Project recently held an open day at our lovely new offices in King Square in Bristol. Lou, Joe and Ellen spent the morning decorating the walls with pictures of previous trips, and putting up lots of information about the work that we do, as well as information on what people can come and do for us. After a slow start, a steady flow of friends and strangers (who left as friends) started to arrive. It was a great chance for all of the volunteers to get together, and for all of us to have a proper chat in a relaxed environment. Lots of tea and biscuits were consumed, and lots of plans were made. An amazing result from this day is there is a very good chance that we now have a long wheel based Land Rover at our disposal in Malawi. We will have more news on this soon. Thanks to all the volunteers and people who came down to see us, and thank you for your ongoing help and support. We couldn't do this without you! Curiosity Auction - 5th March '08 We had another successful and hugely enjoyable Curiosity Auction. Thanks to all the lovely people who came down to bid on the items we had on offer. Ellen took the reigns on this one, and it was an absolute blinder! It was also the first at our new venue, The Full Moon in Stokes Croft. We will miss the friendly people at Cafe Halo, but we felt like it was time for a change.... We'd also like to express our thanks to the brilliant people at The Full Moon, who were excellent. Cheers! Some of the prizes on offer were tickets to Glade festival, a hotly contested utility belt, Burlesque Dancing lessons, loads of beautiful African art work, and many other amazing things. Joe and Ellen did a master job of compering, and in the end we raised just under £600 for the project! The next one is planned for May... See you there! Malawi Education Project Fundraiser Gig - 4th January '08 Shitmat///DJ Scotch Egg///Big Joan///DJ Anton Maoivv Nativity Hoe Down - 8th December, 8pm - 4am That's right we all know the story... however, what you may not know is that The Wise Men not only brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, but actually thought it'd be a good idea to bring some wash boards, a load of gingham and a big pouch of chewy tobacco. They were attending a special function in a barn after all. The shepherds brought the moonshine and much makin' like a hog was made. We are planning a Nativity Hoe Down on the 8th December 8pm-4am, the idea being that Jesus was born in a barn so there must have been some barn dancing going down at some point. With a bill of alternative entertainment and nativity-come-country rednecks fancy dress we hope to recreate the heady highs of that joyous night. On the bill we have high octane folksters Victor Menace, country jokers The Wikets, D-66- a dirty blues one man band, gypsy & reggae sets from DJ Bomber & DJ Symmetric. To add to the madness we will also have a skit poet's 'White Trash Christmas', cabaret performers, and other interactive entertainment. £5 entrance - all profits going to the Malawi Education Project. See the flyer Benefit Gig at Trinity - 30th September 2006 September 30th saw a fantastic gig held in Trinity Arts Centre, Bristol, organized by Florence Fillot. Featuring Dubdadda, Cakeboy, John E Vistic Experience, and local bands & DJs, the night was of great spirits and an outstanding vibe. This was the night before the team left on the first Malawi trip since the project began, what a send off! Dining in Andalucia - September 2006 Lou's folks organised a successful fundraiser just East of Granada in Andalucia, Spain. Inviting everyone they knew and some more, they organized a 3-course meal with live music. They held a raffle which doubled the profits for MEP. All of the prizes were donated, including a leg of Jamon, bubbly, posh coffee cups and some other delights. Hosted at Bar Emelio's, Los Carriones, the band played for half their costs, and people are already asking about the next event. Skydiving - July 2005 13 adventurous folk jumped out of a plane at 12,000 feet (That's 2.5 miles) with a bloke each strapped to their backs, who controlled the large hanky that slowed their decent before they hit the ground after a 45 second, face-distorting freefall. "At one point during the freefall there was a plane flying far below me... that's not right"! (Lou). This event raised most of the money we needed to get the first container to Malawi. CadburyFest - Summer 2005 CadburyFest in summer 2005 was organized by Jhassi Elliot in the Cadbury House, Bristol. Consisting of a roll of live bands for the sunny Sunday afternoon, pub-goers enjoyed a mix of folk, rock and beautiful vocal numbers. Promoting MEP around the garden with flyers and posters, people donated into a bucket and £101 was raised for the project. Thanks all! Pilger Jack Party, Switzerland - Spring 2005 Swiss buddies Malik and co, high up in the snowy mountains of Swizzleland dedicated one of their fortnightly dance-till-the-next-afternoon psychedelic parties to raising money for the Malawi Education Project. Good one... it's happening near and far! www.pilger-jack.ch |
